A social media trend on TikTok is causing concern among experts due to its potential dangers. Young individuals are deliberately sunburning tan lines into their skin, particularly on their chests, as part of this trend, raising alarms about the lack of sun safety awareness among Gen Z.
Various videos circulating on TikTok depict users proudly displaying their halter neck bikini tan lines and sharing their tanning routines. Some influencers even go as far as encouraging sun exposure to achieve the desired tan, promoting the use of high levels of ultraviolet radiation for better results.
While the trend may seem harmless to some, experts emphasize that there is no safe way to tan and warn about the serious risks associated with prolonged sun exposure. The glamorization of tanning culture, especially among young people seeking sunburns and suntans, is particularly concerning as it increases the likelihood of developing skin cancer.
The Cancer Council CEO, Mark Nevin, expresses worry over the normalization of dangerous tanning behaviors, emphasizing that any form of tanning, whether natural or artificial, poses health risks. He highlights the need to shift societal attitudes away from glorifying sun-kissed skin and towards prioritizing skin health.
One disturbing aspect of the trend is the promotion of apps that facilitate personalized tanning routines, advising users on sun exposure durations based on their desired shade of tan. These apps, while marketed as tools for achieving the “perfect glow,” perpetuate risky behaviors that can have long-term consequences on skin health.
Research shows that a significant portion of young adults actively seek tans, either intentionally or unintentionally, despite being aware of the associated risks. The prevalence of this mindset, coupled with social media influencers and celebrities endorsing tanning, contributes to the perpetuation of harmful attitudes towards sun exposure.
Efforts to combat this trend include campaigns like “End The Trend,” which aims to empower young individuals to break the cycle of sun tanning and prioritize skin protection. Influencers and personalities on social media platforms are also speaking out against the trend, urging followers to prioritize health over aesthetic considerations.
With nearly 2,000 Australians succumbing to skin cancer annually and two-thirds of the population expected to develop skin cancer in their lifetime, sun safety measures are paramount. Adopting habits like checking the UV index, wearing sunscreen, protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses, and seeking shade can significantly reduce the risk of sun-related skin damage.
As Australia grapples with the highest skin cancer rates globally, the importance of sun-safe practices cannot be overstated. Embracing one’s natural skin tone and utilizing all forms of sun protection when UV levels are elevated are crucial steps in preventing skin cancer and promoting overall well-being.
